TONGUE THRUST

A tongue thrust is an abnormal swallowing pattern. The following exercises are designed to help you
re-train your tongue and change your swallowing pattern.

CHEWING GUM EXERCISE

1 Chew sugarless gum. Use the tip of your tongue to form a ball with the gum.
2 Using your tongue, lift the gum to the roof of your mouth and hold for 10-20 seconds.

3 With the tongue in the same position, swallow making sure the back teeth are touching. If the gum appears stretched toward the throat as the figure shows, the tongue training has been done successfully.

IMPORTANT:

  • Do these exercises on a daily basis for one hour a day total (you can break this hour up into three 20 min sessions)
  • Continue at least three months
  • Think about swallowing with your tongue in the new position throughout the day.
